ABOUT THE POMERANIAN MEDICAL UNIVERSITY IN SZCZECIN

The Pomeranian Medical University was founded in 1948, initially under the name of the Academy of Physicians in Szczecin. Due to its continuous development the Pomeranian Medical University is well recognized both in Poland and Europe. The University has acquired full academic powers, i.e. it has the right to grant doctoral degrees. The passion and efforts of the staff of the University resulted in an increasing number of students and academic teachers, a widening scope and rising level of specialized health services, and scientific research of growing importance. A lot of new lecture halls, student hostels and other buildings were erected. The Pomeranian Medical University has accreditation of the Polish Medical Universities’ Accreditatio Commission.
The Pomeranian Medical University is governed by the Rector who together with his Deputies, Deans and Administration Director constitutes the Rector’s Council. The Senate is the body managing the whole school. The University has three faculties: Faculty of Medicine (with the English Program), Faculty of Dentistry (with the English Program) and Faculty of Nursing. Each Faculty is governed by the Dean, who together with his Deputies and Head of the Dean’s
Office constitutes the Dean’s Council

.
The English Program is coordinated by the Vice-Dean for the English Program. The University has more than 500 academic staff and almost 150 technical staff. Among the academic staff are56 full professors and 65 associated professors. In the years 1950-2006, 8885 physicians, 3805 dentists and 525 nurses graduated from the University. 1541 researchers obtained the degree of doctor and 245 of habilitated doctor. The title of professor was bestowed on 130 persons. At present, 2468 are studying at the Pomeranian Medical University, including 1248 students of medicine, 460 of dentistry and 760 of nursing. Among them are 500 students of the Medical Faculty, English Program and  the Dentistry Faculty, English Program. The Pomeranian Medical University has also approximately 1770 beds in two Clinical Teaching Hospitals and in other hospitals in Szczecin. The number of patients treated yearly in the clinical departments exceeds 52000

. The Pomeranian Medical University maintains scientific ties with renowned foreign centers in Europe and the USA. The contacts have resulted in the exchange of junior scientists, teaching staff, as well as in numerous publications in reputable journals.

The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), which provides a simple way of measuring and comparing study programs and learning achievements was implemented at the University. This enables recognition of studies when students are transferring from one institution to another.

The strongest advantage of the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin lies in its staff, scientists, teachers and physicians, well educated and strongly motivated to do a good job, keeping pace with the forefront of world medicine.

The Pomeranian Medical University is ranked 2nd from all Polish medical universities (out of 12) . A number of the University’s departments are very well known in Poland and abroad for outstanding work and research of high quality.

The most important goal for the University is permanent modernization of the curriculum in order to make teaching more attractive and the students graduating from our University well prepared to meet the needs of their profession

.
The 6-year English Program at the Pomeranian Medical University was established in 1996. Most of the teaching staff has had training in Great Britain, USA and Canada. The students at the University are instructed in small groups, both in pre-clinical and clinical courses. All doctors graduated from the English Program at the Pomeranian Medical University found job places in their country of origin and have a good reputation. At present about 500 students from Norway, Sweden, Germany, Canada and the USA are studying at the University.

Students with special interest in a specific field of medicine have an opportunity to expand their knowledge as members of more than 20 Student Scientific Groups. That makes them more familiar with methodologies of scientific research, which could finally lead to a Ph.D. program in their country of origin. A good example of such a career is Paul Sangar, our graduate from the class 2002 who presented a paper “Selective Screening for Inborn Errors of Metabolism in Romanian Children” during the XXXIII International Meeting of Student’s Scientific Society. He successfully applied for a position of Ph.D. student at the Pediatric Research Institute, National  Hospital (Rikshospitalet), Oslo, Norway.

The English Program is governed by the Vice-Dean of the English Program who together with members of Dean’s Council prepares the curriculum and syllabus, and supervises the educational process. The English Program is a financially independent unit of the University and its funds come from students’ registration and tuition fees. Financial means obtained, after subtracting the costs of education and the Program administration, are used for continuous improvement of the standard of teaching.
The graduates of the Program receive a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) diploma certifying graduation in medicine from the Medical Faculty or a Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) diploma certifying graduation from the Dental Faculty at the Pomeranian Medical University
.
